I traveled to Dallas Texas where the conference took place Nov 6-10. It was 4 days of really big geek toys. Giga, Tera and even Peta flop machines were either there on the show floor or being discussed by researchers from around the world. The article first appeared on Linux Today on November 13th. It was followed by a post on Linux Weekly News in their daily section and newsforge.com shortly after. As of now, two European web sites have posted it, tonnikala.net, a Finish news website, Ziobudda.net, an Italian news web site, .BR, a Brazilian web site, pro-linux.de, a German web page, and finally, Slashdot graced this article with a post on Nov 15th, 2000.
I helped organize a conference which took place at Brookhaven National Laboratory on October 2nd, of 1999. The idea for the conference was born out of a lunch time converstation after thought between Sean McCorkle and myself around June of that same year. From June to October, I lived a very intense period of my life putting this conference together. The articles details some of the high lights of that time of my life.
Bob Young came to NYC on September 7th and took time away from his busy schedule to meet with his old user group LXNY. The article wanders a bit into Free Software/Open Source theology land, but does have some incites into Bob's understanding of the nature of the Free Software business. This article was first posted by Linux Weekly News in their daily section. Further posts of this article were made by Linux Today as well as Freshmeat.net. Slashdot seems to have a problem with my articles since my submission got rejected...
Donald Becker came to NY and gave a talk at the New York Linux Users Group (NYLUG) about his Beowulf project. I attended and wrote up what I saw and heard. It is slightly technical, but a good introduction to a Beowulf system for novices. The article was first posted by Linux Today on May 23rd, 1999. Posts by Linux Weekly News, (on their Daily updates page), Freshmeat and Linux World followed the next day. Slashdot has not graced this article with a post though :(
Linus Torvalds gave a talk in Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory's Ramsey Hall. He then gave the Keynote address at the Linux Global Summit held as part of Spring Comdex 1999 show held at the McCormick Place convention center in Chicago. I was there to see and record it all in gory detail. The article has been published on Slashdot , Linux Today, and Linux Weekly News. The article was first posted on April 26, 1999.
After publishing An Ode to Richard Stallman, I decided to dig thought my httpd access_log files in search of the /. effect, which I found. So I put on my experimentalist hat and wrote up a short paper, in scientific prose, to document it. Slashdot.org announced it on Feb 1st, 1999.
The /. effect article above was so popular, that it had over 16,000 readers in under 48 hours. The ensuing /. effect on this /. effect paper was rather remarkable and thus the data deserved to be published as an addendum to the /. effect paper.
I went to the NYSIA Software Summit held at the Fashion Institute of Technology in Manhattan, where Richard Stallman was on two panels. This article describes my experience at this conference. Its URL is http://www.lug.org.cn/lg-zh/lg-zh/issue38/adler.html.)
This is a write-up on what drives the OSS movement. "It isn't just bug fix'in !!!". This article has appeared in Linux Today, Linux Power and Linux World. It was first published on Nov 14th, 1998.
